"Lidice Remembered Around the World"  -- NEW EXPANDED VERSION OF A WORLD WAR II TRAGEDY

After traveling to Lidice, Czech Republic, and meeting with the Mayor, Vice Mayor and staff members at  the Lidice Memorial there, Toni Brendel revised and added to her earlier book,  “Lidice Remembered Around the World.”  Published by Penfield Books, Inc., Iowa City, Iowa, the new book was released on June 1, 2013.

The book chronicles events of World War II which led to the assassination of high ranking Nazi,  Reinhard Heydrich, Protector of Czechoslovakia.   Heydrich, one of the authors of the planned “Final Solution to the Jewish Question,” was highly responsible for the plan to eradicate the Jewish population in Europe and part of Russia.  Hitler sent him to destroy the closely-knit underground resistance movement set up by the Czechs, and had all but accomplished  that at the time of his assassination.  The Czech Government in exile, with Czechoslovak military operating out of London, England, planned the highly secret mission, “Operation Anthropoid” and it was carried out successfully.

The book then lays forth the horrific retaliation meted out by the Nazis as they destroyed the Village of Lidice, shot its men, sent its women to concentration camps, and gassed 82 of their 105 children.

Many books, films, poems, and musical offerings have portrayed events surrounding the Lidice tragedy.   Brendel’s book goes one step further, however, as the story goes on to reveal the outpouring of attention the tragedy evoked from around the world;  it cites places and instances that Lidice is remembered, how, and why.

One of two monuments in North America that memorialize the village is in Brendel’s home town of Phillips, Wisconsin.  Her story includes how this came to be, gives details of how the village was memorialized in Crest Hill, Illinois, in other places of the world, and includes photographs  of the  memorial in Lidice, Czech Republic.

Czech Ambassador, Petr Gandalovic had this to say about “Lidice Remembered Around the World”

I would like to express my deep appreciation to Ms. Toni Brendel for her efforts to preserve the memory of the Czech village of Lidice which was brutally wiped off the face of the earth by the Nazis in 1942. With splendid devotion, Ms. Brendel took it upon herself to take care of the Lidice memorial in Phillips Wisconsin, and has initiated many commemorative events. She is now bringing the tragic occurrence to our memory in a book which is as concise as it is momentous.

“Lidice Remembered Around the World” recounts one of the most important events of World War II – the assassination of Deputy Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. He was a key figure of the Nazi regime and one of the architects of the Shoah, the infamous “Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” Even though the Czechs rid Europe of the “Butcher of Prague,” their act of courage came with the dire price of the complete annihilation of two innocent villages: Lidice and Lezaky, Czechoslovakia. The brutality of such acts drew worldwide attention and dispelled, in many people’s minds, the last doubts about Nazi Germany.

Toni Brendel’s book accurately renders the reaction of the outside world, especially in the United States of America, and guides us thus through several locations commemorating Lidice to this day. Therefore, Toni Brendel has my sincerest gratitude and warmest thanks – which I would like to hereby express on my own behalf as well as that of the Czech people.

(Signed)
His Excellency,
Petr Gandalovic, Czech Ambassador to USA

"Slovak American Touches"

We're extremely proud and happy to introduce the book, "Slovak American Touches" by Toni Brendel, published by Penfield Books.

In addition to family feature stories, information on Slovak American dance groups, artists, national folk dress (kroje), fraternal benefit organizations, learning institutions, social clubs, museums, libraries, and recipes handed down through the years by the Brosko-Mraz family, what makes this book unique is the large section on The Centre for Folk Art Productions (Ustedie l'udovej Umeleckej Vyroby) in Bratislava, Slovakia.  Amidst the struggle to keep their heritage alive, a plan was devised in 1945 to preserve traditional crafts and folk art at the centre.  Today, the expanded centre flourishes as a thriving resource for young artists and craftsmen who are carefully taught by the old masters.  Their story is brought to you in appealing pages of photography as well as the written word and meshes the Slovak culture from both sides of the ocean for the enjoyment of all.

Pictured on the covers of the book are granddaughters of the author, dressed in authentic kroj from the Spis Region of Slovakia, the land of their great great grandparents' birth!
