"Lidice Remembered Around the World"

"Lidice Remembered Around the World" by Toni Brendel, gives a brief chronicle of historical facts that led to the WWII destruction of the Village of Lidice in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) and its aftermath.  The informational book is filled with beautiful colored photographs of the known monuments which memorialize the fallen village and its people in various locations of the world.  It also conveys something about the Czech-Americans who felt so closely bound to their countrymen that they not only erected monuments but continue to remember them with annual memorial services.

Lovely colored rose photos are interspersed throughout the book with information included to encourage the reader to help the people of Lidice regenerate the Rosarium which flourishes on Lidice Memorial grounds.  Known as the Garden of Friendship and Peace, seemingly limitless varieties of roses were provided by over 30 countries of the world.  Since roses need continual care and are duly affected by weather and other elements, the rose garden maintenance, growth and care are ongoing projects and extra funding is continually necessary.

The author dedicated the book to the people of Lidice and Lezaky, who suffered like fates at the hands of Nazi SS, in June 1942, and to those who remember them.

Book Review:

"I just completed reading your "Lidice Remembered..."  What an educational, well organized history of essential details combined with personal insights!

Your book not only brings back personal memories, refreshes my memory of articles/books/films, but also included new details of which I was not aware, in particular the history of the Crest Hill Memorial.

What a great combination of narrative and pictures.  I knew of the Lidice roses, but your weaving in rose photos was very touching and appropriate.

Thanks for another of your fine efforts regarding Lidice and the Czech/Slovaks."

"Slovak American Touches"

We're extremely proud and happy to introduce the book, "Slovak American Touches" by Toni Brendel, published by Penfield Books.

In addition to family feature stories, information on Slovak American dance groups, artists, national folk dress (kroje), fraternal benefit organizations, learning institutions, social clubs, museums, libraries, and recipes handed down through the years by the Brosko-Mraz family, what makes this book unique is the large section on The Centre for Folk Art Productions (Ustedie l'udovej Umeleckej Vyroby) in Bratislava, Slovakia.  Amidst the struggle to keep their heritage alive, a plan was devised in 1945 to preserve traditional crafts and folk art at the centre.  Today, the expanded centre flourishes as a thriving resource for young artists and craftsmen who are carefully taught by the old masters.  Their story is brought to you in appealing pages of photography as well as the written word and meshes the Slovak culture from both sides of the ocean for the enjoyment of all.

Pictured on the covers of the book are granddaughters of the author, dressed in authentic kroj from the Spis Region of Slovakia, the land of their great great grandparents' birth!
